Il club prende il nome da Arturo Fernández Vial, un importante imprenditore e filantropo cileno che donò il terreno per la costruzione dello stadio della squadra.
Il Fernández Vial gioca le sue partite casalinghe allo stadio Ester Roa Rebolledo, che ha una capacità di 30.000 spettatori.
La squadra ha vinto due titoli nazionali, nel 1952 e nel 1953. Ha vinto anche quattro Coppe del Cile, nel 1959, 1969, 1979 e 1981.
Il Fernández Vial ha partecipato a diverse competizioni internazionali, tra cui la Coppa Libertadores e la Coppa Sudamericana.
